“Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Thessalonians 5:23, ESV
As Christians it is important that we not only receive Christ as our Savior, but also allow Him to be Lord over our daily lives. Pursuing Spiritual growth is how we live like Jesus in this broken world. God does not call us to just sit in our salvation, but we must actively seek God’s wisdom and guidance from the Holy Spirit. This process of growth is called sanctification. Through sanctification God provides us the strength and grace to live for His glory; turning away from our sinful nature (2 Peter 1:2-4).
We must live in the Spirit’s guidance for growth and perseverance of faith in this broken world. Galatians 5:16 (NLT) says, “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves”. Satan will try to trip us up and pull us away from the hope we have in Christ. His lies will try to convince us of things like we can do it in our own strength or that God does not even love us. To combat these lies we have to remind ourselves of God’s promises and Truth. It is by resting in God’s faithfulness that we can discern the attempts of the enemy to bring us down.
Jesus died so that we may live a life connected with God. One where we can be God’s light in the darkness. By growing and sharing our faith, we can fulfill the purposes our heavenly Father has for us. He draws us into a relationship with Him, ready to free us from the chains of our sinful nature. Consider this, before his death, Jesus prayed for us to be sanctified by God’s Truth. The Truth of God’s Word and His promises. He sacrificed himself for us to be able to do so (John 17:16-20).
Here are some practical tips to help you seek God and grow in your relationship with God:
It does not have to be a lot. However, reading consecutive verses or entire chapters help you discern the proper context and message.
In the morning, on your drive to work or even in the midst of your chaos, lift it all up to God. Pray for peace and wisdom for every situation.
Seek a woman of faith who can help encourage your faith walk. Someone who is spiritually wiser and can help speak God’s Truth into your life. If you are a seasoned warrior of Christ, also having someone you mentor can remind you of His faithfulness and give you a chance to learn through someone else’s eyes.
Look for other resources to help you grow. Maybe even switch it up from time to time. There are so many things to try. Bible studies, podcasts, devotionals, social media, blogs with newsletters, etc. Different resources can be helpful at different phases of your faith journey. Pray for wisdom and discernment while choosing so that God can lead you to what He desires to teach you next.
