How to Stay Focused on God Throughout Your Day

How to stay focused on God

With the distractions of life, we can find ourselves struggling to focus on God, even though we desire to keep God first in every area of life. Losing focus on God is not something that we are excluded from just because we are Christians. Seasons can come and go, but the Lord can use each season to grow us closer to Him. These 5 tips for how to stay focused on God can help to you deepen your relationship with God and keep your eyes focused on Him.

5 Successful Tips for How to Stay Focused on God

1. Set Time to Spend with God Every Day

Spending time with God may seem like an obvious way to focus on God, but how many times have we not set time for God each day? In my own life, especially since becoming a mother, I have struggled with spending time with God on daily basis. Yes, I have had my long stretches of being in a good routine with my time with God, but I can get off track more than I can count. This is common for all Christians—as much as we may hate to admit it—we are guilty of not setting aside time for our Lord.

You may choose to spend time with God in the morning. When you start your day by spending time with God, it can help to give you a good mindset and keep you focused on God. Often times, the morning can feel hectic and chaotic, especially if you have little children. Though by waking up an hour earlier and putting God first at the beginning of the day, it may help to get you motivated and uplifted for the day.

"And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed."

Mark 1:35, ESV

If you absolutely dread mornings, then no worries, you can say your morning prayer then set a time that works best with your schedule to spend with the Lord—just as long as you make time to spend with God each day. The set time isn’t as important as the time spent with God. When we focus on making God a priority, then you are putting God first in your life.

2. Remain in Prayer Continuously

To pray continuously means that you are seeking and leaning on God throughout every day. Our prayer time with God shouldn’t just be at set times each day, but rather, throughout your day. When we constantly seek God though prayer, we rely on the Lord’s strength instead of our own.

"You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart."

Jeremiah 29:13

Praying without ceasing is how we endure our daily life with its highs and lows. Your prayer time with the Lord can get you through the hardest of times and the busiest seasons. It’s easy to get distracted with our daily tasks and responsibilities that we forget to focus on God during our day. I’m so guilty of doing this in my prayer life! If you can relate, ask the Lord to help you focus on your prayer life continuously in your day.

In my personal life, I have been feeling nudged to grow my prayer life. My prayers have increased my dependence on Him to get through each day as a mother. Since I have been focusing more on God and leaning on His strength through prayer, I have been surprised to find how much more patience I have with my children. My mind has been more focused on godly discipline and teaching biblical truths. (If you have children, my biggest advice to you is PRAYER.)

3. Commit to a Bible Study

When we spend time with God, we should devote time to reading the Bible. Taking time to read the Bible is very similar to committing to a workout program. You don’t always have the motivation to start your workout each day, but after you finish it then you reap feeling great. Sometimes our Bible study can be like that. No motivation to read the Bible at the start, though once you begin reading, God can excite and encourage you with what He reveals to you.

For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

1 Timothy 4:8

Reading your Bible can be accomplished in so many ways. You can start by reading through the Bible, doing a topical study, studying a book of the Bible, listening to the Bible, joining a church Bible study group, writing scriptures, completing a Bible study/devotional, etc. Find a method that excites you and just start!

If your goal is to focus on God, I would start with this weekly step-by-step guide to center your life on God: Fix Your Focus.* Daily Grace Co has so many Bible studies and other biblical resources, that you are sure to find something that will inspire your relationship with God. I love Daily Grace Co and all the gospel-centered resources that they provide!

4. Serve God

God has gifted each of us in the body of Christ. The design of God is incredible. We’re created to use our gifts to glorify God and bless other people, but our gifts can be a fulfilling blessing in our life as well. Growing in our spiritual gifts can benefit your focus on God.

As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies—in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

1 Peter 4:10-11, ESV

When you serve God, you are glorifying God and focusing on him. With the internet at our fingertips, you have several resources to discover your spiritual gifts if you don’t already know what they are. Encouraging other women truly energizes my spirit, which is one reason why I started this Christian website, Inspire Within. If you have a desire to encourage others, maybe you should consider starting a Christian blog too.

5. Surround Yourself with Believers

A solid Christian community can grow your faith in Christ and help you stayed focus on God. The more you surround yourself with Christ-minded people, the more you start to become Christ-minded. In other words, if you want to focus more on God, then surround yourself with people who focus on God. The Bible says in Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.”

Here are a couple other verses about the importance of surrounding yourself with other believers:

Do not be deceived: ‘Bad company ruins good morals.’” 1 Corinthians 15:33, ESV

Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.” Proverbs 13:20, ESV

Who you hang out with is just as important as and who you watch and listen to. This also applies to what you watch and listen to. Just some food for thought to help you focus more on God: What social media accounts are you following? What kind of entertainment are you filling your mind with? These things matter to our spiritual walk with God, because what we feed our minds can become what we focus on or even believe.

Several times in my life, I have had times where the Lord has shown me things that was affecting my focus on God, such as secular music, friendships, etc. Some resources that have been such an encouragement to my relationship with God has been Christian YouTube channels, podcasts, and music. One day, I plan to share some of my recommended Christian resources to help you be inspired from them as well.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

Romans 12:2, ESV

Hope that these 5 tips for how to stay focused on God have given you some successful ways to grow in your faith! We all can be better at staying focused on God. There are times where we feel so close to God and other times where we are distant, but we must always continue to strive to grow closer to God.
