7 Ways to Complete Your Bible Study | Tips for Finishing that Bible Study You Started but Never Finished

Janee Hughes • March 1, 2023

Are you struggling to finish that Bible study that

you started at the beginning of the year? Do you rarely make it through any devotional or Bible study that you were so excited to start?

Life is busy—we can all relate with that! Your career is working you overtime, a sick child kept you awake all night, or simply you simply lost the motivation… whatever the reason, you’re not alone. It’s easy to start a Bible study, then next thing you know you haven’t touched that Bible Study in months. If you’re ready to get back to that Bible Study, we are going to share with you 7 tips to help you complete your Bible Study.

7 Tips to Help You Complete Your Bible Study:

1. Ask God to Give you a Lasting Desire to Study the Bible

As you know, prayer is powerful. Because our God is powerful. When you ask God to give you a strong desire to study the Bible, He can certainly answer that prayer! God looks at your heart and He sees your whole life down to every second of your daily schedule. So, give yourself grace! Pray that God will give you a lasting desire to study the Bible. Ask if He could remind you to regularly be in His Word. God loves when you spend time with Him. Through your time in God’s Word, He shows and teaches you more and more about who He is. Time with God deepens your relationship with Him!

2. Analyze your Daily Schedule

What does your schedule look like every day? Where can you fit in your Bible study time? Consider what went wrong the last time you may have not finished a Bible study. Maybe you didn’t set aside time for the Bible study, or the time set aside didn’t work out well for you. If night didn’t work, you could try to choose a time earlier in the day. Or vice versa. Would lunch break, children’s naptime, getting to work a few minutes earlier work better for you? Whether morning or night, find the best time for your personal schedule for your Bible study and determine your worst times too.

3. Choose to Have Off Days for Your Bible Study

Most Bible studies are created to do on a daily basis, but they don’t have to be completed that way! You can choose how often you want to work on your Bible study. Want weekends off? GO for it! Would rather commit to every other day? Great plan! Ultimately, you get to decide when you want to schedule you Bible study time—and that doesn’t have to be every day.

4. Use a Planner to Determine a Finishing Date

If you’re not already a believer in planners, there is just something about having your days scheduled in a daily planner. Once you have decided on a best time for you and what days you want to work on your Bible study, it’s time to set the Bible study “appointments” in your planner. Scheduling time will make you more likely to commit to your goal of completing your Bible study. You can do it!

Plan out your entire Bible study to know when your finishing date will be. Even if you miss a couple of days, you can try to catch up on your off days or finish a few days late. Remember, there is no pressure. A planner is great way to keep you on track and motivated!

5. Seek a Bible Study Buddy or Accountability

Many people have trouble getting things alone. If you struggle to stay motivated, accountability can tremendously help to keep you focused on your goal! Ask a close friend or family member if they could hold you accountable. You know that good friend who would be honored to help ya stick to it! You could even ask them if they want to join, too! Hey, you could even make it a Bible study group! The main point is to have accountability to complete your Bible study, whatever that looks like for you.

6. Set a Timer to Keep Focused During Bible Study

If you can only fit in a few minutes a day, don’t feel like you have to skip. Set a timer for whatever time you have… 15 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes. 5 minutes of Bible reading is better than no time. Commit to a time then set the timer. You will feel more accomplished than if you did nothing at all. Also, don’t feel like you need to rush. The purpose is to keep you focused. Turning off your phone notifications can also be a wonderful way to not get sidetracked during Bible study time.

7. Share What You are Learning from Your Bible Study

What you learn from a Bible study can often be exciting. You could study a topic over and over again and still learn something new. God can share with you an aha moment. Sharing what you learn can help you retain it and also show you how truly valuable your time in the Bible is. So, reach out to your bestie or mentor friend and share about God has shown you through time in your Bible study.

Consistency is key to completing your Bible Study

Starting Bible study is great, but finishing your Bible study is even more great. Consistency can be a struggle. Though like they say, consistency is key! How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. So, set your start date again and get to biting through your Bible study. With consistency, you will finally able to look back and say: “I did it. I completed my Bible Study!” May you enjoy your time in the Bible and feel closer to God through what you learn!
