“ Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. Avoid godless chatter, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly .”
2 Timothy 2:14-16, NIV
How do you “present yourself to God as one approved”? The King James Version translation says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God”. Our job is not to get approval from people but to be approved by God. God’s workmen do not need to be ashamed of the Gospel by correctly handling the word of truth. Studying the Word of God is very important for believers to do, especially through personal Bible study and not just from reading or listening to what other people have to say about God’s Word. We need to consistently and diligently study the Bible, so that we will have encounters with God through it, truly know and understand what it means, apply it to our everyday lives, and correctly teach it to others.
Paul was telling Timothy to remind the believers to not argue over insignificant details/discussions or participate in any godless chatter, which is referring to anything that takes the focus off of the gospel of Christ and God’s Word. Some false teachers teach man’s opinions and teachings, not God’s teachings from His Word. The vain babble of false teachers/prophets share only what people like to hear or want to hear, but it contradicts what the Gospel says. Such profane and vain teachings are misleading, harmful, and useless. We must study God’s Word with wisdom and care and have nothing to do with godless chatters.
Do you consistently study God’s Word? Take time to be in God’s Word every day. Here is a great Bible Study to learn more about studying God's Word: Search the Word Bible Study by Daily Grace Co.
Are you living for the approval of man or God? Live in a way that is not ashamed of the Gospel, but is focused on living only pleasing to God?
Always test what people teach about God’s Word by reading for yourself what the Word of God says. Have nothing to do with meaningless quarreling or godless chatters. Check read article or listen to this podcast for more about False Teachers & How to Identify Them .
