Our identity and condition of our soul is fully wrapped up in our perceived self-worth. It is something within us that analyzes our worthiness to be loved or belong. The sources we choose to use as a measuring stick to determine our self-worth can have a HUGE impact on who we are, our mental health and our choices throughout our life. So how should we measure our self-worth? The World often tells us it should be measured by how well you meet the current beauty standards. Other times it's by how much money you make or how many friends you have. But the real question we should be asking is how does God measure our self-worth?
“for all sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
Romans 3:23 ESV
We are all born with an instinct to always do the best and be the best. Competition thrives in many areas of our lives---like sports or in the workplace. Sometimes that competition is a healthy, fun competition. Other times it is an unhealthy push to try to reach perfection. It even reaches into things like marriage and parenting. Since becoming a Mom, I have seen the depth of competition that some women feel like they need to go to in order to prove that they are a “good Mom”. However, the real freedom is in recognizing that we will never reach perfection, and that is ok. We all struggle. We all fall to temptations. And we all fall short of God’s glory. The true Biblical reality is that we cannot fully appreciate Jesus’ sacrifice until we fully recognize how badly we need a Savior in the first place. Christ wipes away our sins, helping bridge the gap between us and our Heavenly Father (1 Timothy 2:5).
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son,
that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world,
but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
John 3:16-17 ESV
God loves us SO much that He sacrificed His Son to repair the broken relationship with His creation. We were not worthy of Jesus’ sacrifice. Our sin pulls us away from our Heavenly Father. But God made a way through His Son Jesus, making it clear that we are worth it! He made it clear that He loves us more than we could ever imagine and that, when we accept Jesus as our Savior we can then become Children of God (John 1:12). Our self-worth and identity then comes with the title of Son or Daughter of the One True King. With Christ working in us, we receive God’s amazing grace and mercy. We are called worthy, loved, and given a purpose to glorify the Kingdom of God.
So what or who are you using to measure your self-worth? None of us will ever reach perfection, but God makes it clear that we are worthy of His Son’s sacrifice and that our identity should be measured through the lens of His eyes and not that of the World.
