Two Steps to Draw Near to God

To deepen your relationship with God the Father you need to draw more near to Him through a consistent prayer life, praising through worship, and studying the Bible. A great example of learning more about the Father is through a daily devotion. James 4:8 (NKJV) says “ Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” In other words, this verse explains that when you come near to God, then He will come near to you as well. The more you are seeking God with all of your life the more that He will be found in your life.

1. Make Time to Spend with God

If you are seeking God then you will devote time to spend with Him. Through your time with God, He will make Himself known to you more and more. He will show you more of His goodness and character. “ You will seek Me and Find Me when you seek Me with all of your heart ,” as it says in Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV). 

When you learn about God and who He is in your life, you are more mindful of His Presence throughout your life. You will feel closer to God when you see the evidence of His working Hands throughout all the areas of your life. 

Picture your relationship with God like a dating relationship, you have dates to find out more about the other person. The act of spending time, “going on dates,” will grow the relationship as long as you continue to interact and spend time with them. It is the time spent together, the conversations, and the thoughtful acts that will make you feel close.

Although a relationship with God turns into more than a dating relationship. A relationship with God is the most important relationship that you will ever have! God wants to spend time with you and to hear from you. God wants to speak personally to you. He has great things to tell you and show you. The Lord sees you, knows you, and loves you! The love that God has for you is unconditional. If you want to grow closer to the Lord, spend time with Him! Seek God with all of your heart. 

2. Make God Your Top Priority

Make your time with God a top priority. To keep committed to spending time with God, you can schedule a set time to devote to Him. Consider your daily schedule, figure out what time works best for you, then complete it. For instance, you can study a devotional when you wake up, read a chapter in your Bible before bed, praise God through worship music on your lunch break, or have a genuine prayer on your route to work. 

Add intentional ways to devote time to God to your schedule. It can be any time of day and vary from day-to-day. Just set it on your calendar or make a reminder on your cell phone, if that is what you need to do to commit to doing it. That is not so you can treat it as something to check off your list, but so that you can make it your top priority.

 Remember, you don’t have to commit to hours at a time. It can only be five minutes and increase gradually with time. It is not about the amount of time (quantity) you spend; it is about the value and intention you have (quality). Quality of time over quantity of time!

 The more you commit to time with God, then the more you will find yourself desiring to be in the presence of God all the time. You won’t have to set a time or place anymore; you will just naturally acknowledge Him and want to have time with Him each day. God loves His time with you. You will love it too! God will show you more of His Majesty and He will fill the space that only He can fill.

Write this verse for encouragement on a paper note, so that you can constantly be reminded to seek God in your daily life: “ You will seek Me and Find Me when you seek Me with all of your heart .” (Jeremiah 29:13, NIV) Put your note in a spot that you see each day. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. You will grow closer to God and love the feeling of being in His Presence every day!
