“Jesus answered, ‘Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.’”
John 4:13-14, NIV
Jesus is showing an analogy between physical and spiritual with this statement. Jesus is saying that the water He offers is living water because life in Him quenches our spiritual thirst through our eternal life in Him. Our physical bodies need water and food to survive. Our soul needs to be filled with spiritual water and food from a life in Christ. Our need for spiritual water is only quenched through Christ; we can’t be spiritually quenched through our works or our own doing. Our life is empty without Christ, but with Christ, it is full and overflowing.
In John 4:14, Jesus says that His water is a “spring of water welling up to eternal life”, which means we become satisfied when we are full of Christ. In Psalm 36:9, God is referred to as the “fountain of life”. Through God’s fountain of life, we are alive and can be full of Him. We are filled with the Spirit when we spend time in God’s presence, pray, and study the Bible. The Holy Spirit within us guides us, gives us gifts to fulfill our purpose, gives us strength, and power from Christ.
We don’t deprive ourselves when we are hungry or thirsty. So, why would we deprive our spirit of the Lord and growing in Him? Seek the Lord and be in His presence through prayer and His Word.
