“This Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ Jesus replied, ‘Like it be now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.’ Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’”
Matthew 3:13-17, NIV
Jesus was perfect and didn’t need baptism as a sign for the repentance of sins, as we do. He did it to “fulfill all righteousness” and we ought to do the same. To accomplish God’s work. Jesus displayed an example that we ought to follow to be obedient to the service of the Lord. When Jesus, God’s Son was baptized, the Spirit of God came upon Him, then the Father spoke from heaven His approval of His Son. In this Scripture, it’s amazing to see the Trinity—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—present at the same time. Let us believe in the Lord and be baptized in the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit to show an outward sign of our commitment to follow Him.
Have you been baptized in the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit? Acts 2:38 says to repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins. Repent means to turn away from sin and baptism is a sign of faith. For more reference to the Trinity and baptism read Jesus’ Great Commission, Matthew 28:19-20 and Mark 16:15-18. For additional study, read the full chapter of Matthew 3.
