“Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ.”
1 Corinthians 11:1, NIV
1 Corinthians was written by Paul to the church in Corinth. He was a follower of Christ. We are called to be followers of Christ. Paul wasn’t saying to follow his example because he thought of himself highly, but as a way for the Corinthians to know the example of Christ. The Gospels of Christ were not written at this time, so the Corinth church had no way to know who Jesus was.
Christ’s example came from who He was and is, God’s Son. Jesus lived the way He did because of the Father. The core of Christ is pure, which is why His behavior was perfect. We should focus on the core of who we are in Christ, not on external performance. Following Christ should come from a life centered on God. If our spiritual core is focused on Him, then we will want to live more and more like the example of Christ.
What areas of your life need to be centered on God? The more we focus on Christ, the more we will want to be like Him. Is your life an example of Christ? How can your life imitate the life of Christ? The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) are a great place to start. Pick a book and start reading!
