“If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself,’ you are doing right. But if you show favoritism, you sin and are convicted by the law as lawbreakers.”
James 2:8-9, NIV
The royal law is to “love your neighbor as yourself”, which was originally said by the Lord in Leviticus 19:18 (NIV). Loving your neighbor as yourself is treating others as you would want to be treated. The love that Jesus displayed did not show favoritism. He didn’t love people according to their position, title, status, job, age, or et cetera—Jews or Gentiles, He loves them all. Gentiles meant anyone other than a Jew.
We are called to be like Christ by loving like Christ did. In John 15:12 (NIV), Jesus said “…Love each other as I have loved you”. We must love people no matter their status, appearance, age, race, personality, and how they treat you. Let us love like Christ by loving others, even the ones who treats us wrongly or hate us.
Are you loving others like yourself? Do you tend to show favoritism with your love?
